According to the latest report from Gartner Research, Android device shipment is forecasted to exceed 1 billion in 2014 which is 26 percent more than previous year’s sale. 75% of Android’s sale will come from emerging markets where budget or mid-priced smartphones and tablets are big hit. By the end of 2014, Android will take up 45 percent of overall mobile operating system market.
Also, the industry wide mobile phone shipments will reach 1.9 billion in 2014- five percent growth compared to 2013. The fastest growth of 50 percent year on year will be seen in the “ultramobile” segment which includes tablets, hybrids and clamshells. The huge growth in global shipments of smartphones and tablets can be attributed to the sharp decline in global personal computer sales. Garter says, fueled by low retail prices, tablets sales alone will experience 47 percent year on year growth. According to previous Report by IDC, tablet shipments will exceed PC sales by 2015 and smartphone sale will account for 69 percent of all the devices (tablet, smartphones and hybrids) shipped.
While Android occupies huge market share compared to iOS, the latter takes bigger chunk of the profit due to its premium priced products. However, Google makes most of its revenue through advertisements and the large base of Android users will provide a profitable source for Google Ad revenues.
