WordPress is the biggest content management system in the world, millions of websites use the blogging platform from small blogs to big websites such as TechCrunch, Mashable, and even this site is powered by WordPress.

WordPress offers two ways of build websites — you can use the free WordPress software to create a self-hosted site on any hosting provider company you want or you can create a hosted website on WordPress.com.

The company behind WordPress is Automattic, founded by Matt Mullenweg, and recently they updated its WordPress.com dashboard that allows self-hosted connected using the Jetpack plugin and hosted users to control and create new content for their sites from a single user interface. The company recently released an app for Mac and today there is a desktop app for Windows as well.

The app is sophisticated at its core, but it’s very simple for anyone to use. If you have been using the WordPress.org dashboard, you already know how to use the WordPress app for Windows. In fact, many would argue that it’s the same WordPress.org website wrap into a separate web browser instance.

The WordPress app for Windows includes the following main features:

  • The My Sites dashboard for managing multiple sites, whether WordPress.com or self-hosted WordPress with Jetpack.
  • The new WordPress.com Editor, with in-app previewing and draft auto-saving.
  • The Reader, which lets you follow and read any of your favorite sites, and the all-new Discover, which recommends outstanding content from across all of WordPress.
  • Insights and Stats, which show you exactly how your site and posts are performing.
  • In-app notifications, so you can see comments, likes, and new follows all in one place.

The only caveat is that it’s not a universal Windows app that runs on phones, tablets, and desktops, instead it’s a Win32 legacy desktop application that is based on Electron, a technology that allows to build desktop applications using web technologies, which allows the app to talk to WordPress.com JavaScript application and Calypso.

Although, many users will simply prefer to launch a web browser and login to WordPress.com to manage their sites, an application was a must have as Automattic reveals that the number of WordPress.com users is two times larger than users on Mac and Linux combined.
