Last year was not a great year for gaming. While there were a handful of good games  (e.g Metro Exodus, Control), they weren’t smash hits like 2018’s stellar PS4 exclusives. However, 2020 will see some of the most awaited games coming out this year. Along with the launch of next-gen consoles like the PS5 and Xbox Series X, we’ll also see really anticipated games like Cyberpunk 2077 and The Last of Us: Part II coming out. So without further ado, here’s Gamer Tweak’s list of best upcoming games in 2020:

Here are the best upcoming games of 2020

Nioh 2

The first Nio was a surprise hit with fans of the Soulsborne franchise. While the franchise looks aesthetically similar to Dark Souls, it does have a unique identity of its own. Nioh 2 is going to release on March 13, 2020, and will be a PS4 exclusive for the time being. Aside from a great trailer, we last played the game during its open beta period. If you’re not familiar with the franchise, Nioh 2 is an action RPG with elements from Dark Souls/Bloodborne/Sekiro. That translates to a lot of trying, and a lot of dying. We can’t wait to get our hands on this eery Samurai Souls game!

Doom Eternal

2016’s Doom was a pleasant surprise for many. The game was a love letter to 90s shooter games with its fast pace, brutal action and brilliant level design. id Software will be back with Doom Eternal this year with even more blood-curdling action, giving players new tools to hack their enemies. Like the first Doom, Doom: Eternal will be targeting 60fps on all platforms, and that is something we’re really looking forward to. It’ll also employ the best use of raytracing on PC yet. There’s no action game as fast-paced, as rhythmic, or as visceral as the Doom franchise on the market right now.

Final Fantasy VII Remake

I’ll be the first to admit that I’m not the biggest fan of the Final Fantasy games. I played a bit of FFXV, so when Square Enix announced that a Final Fantasy VII remake was on its way, I wasn’t as excited. However, after seeing the gameplay presented during E3 2019, I was surprised. Suddenly this upcoming game was looking like it had a shot. The game has been remade and rebuilt from the ground up, with new combat mechanics and enhanced graphics. It was recently delayed to April 10th, so we can only hope that the wait will be worth it for longtime Final Fantasy fans.

Half-Life: Alyx

Ah, Half-Life. Valve’s crown jewel. But before you get excited, let me break the sad news: it’s not Half-Life 3. That said, the game does look as promising as anything with the words ‘Half-Life’ attached to it. Alyx is a VR-only title that takes place before the events of Half-Life 2, where players will control Alyx Vance. Familiar weapons like the gravity gun will return, with more fun elements added specifically for VR. As a token of appreciation, owners of the Valve Index VR system will receive the game for free. To see Valve return to form with a high-quality Half-Life game will certainly be a highlight of 2020.

The Last of Us Part II

Sony and Naughty Dog’s exceptionally outstanding relationship will yet again see a familiar face’s return. The Last of Us: Part II will follow Ellie as the main protagonist. I love the first Last of Us and its DLC, so to say that I’ve been waiting patiently for the sequel is an understatement. The game was delayed from February to April, but knowing Neil Druckmann and Sony Interactive, I wouldn’t look too much into it. If anything, for Sony fans the game will certainly prove to be one of the best upcoming games of 2020. Naughty Dogs have proven time and again how good they are at these PlayStation exclusives, and to give the aging PS4 a parting gift in Last of Us Part II is a great gift for all.

Assassin’s Creed: Ragnarok (Rumored)

Assassin’s Creed Ragnarok (rumored title) is set to be the first cross-gen Assassin’s Creed title this generation. While Ubisoft hasn’t officially revealed the game, I’m 100% sure it’ll release in October, just like the previous games in the franchise. The game is rumored to have a story featuring either Vikings or Norse gods, depending on which leak you believe. Considering how successful the previous game was, I’m sure Ubisoft will double down on the RPG mechanics.  Personally speaking, being a big fan of the franchise, this is one of my personal best upcoming games of this year.

Marvel’s Avengers

Another delayed game, Square Enix’s Avengers is shaping up to be a Destiny game with Marvel characters. Not that I’m complaining, I like Destiny. Avengers is releasing in September 2020 and going by what the developers have said, it’ll be a live service game well into the next generation of consoles’ lifetime. I’m sure the PS5 and Xbox Series X will see this game ported there, with elements like cross-play and cross-save coming into the picture. After all, who doesn’t want to fly around as Iron Man, or thrown Mjolnir as Thor? After 2018’s Spider-Man PS4, more people want a taste of Marvel games, and with Endgame’s success, I for one can’t wait for this game.

Cyberpunk 2077

Cyberpunk 2077 is probably the most awaited game of 2020. Developed by the critically acclaimed Witcher series, CD Projekt RED is shaping this up to be the game to beat in 2020. Cyberpunk 2077 is an open-world RPG set in the dystopian Night City. The game is being touted as one of the best looking games of the generation, with raytracing being a key part of the experience. And don’t forget about Keanu Reeves! The game practically checks all the boxes – An open-world game by CDPR, with Keanu Reeves, with next-gen visuals and potentially hundreds of hours of gameplay.
